How To Remove Shortcut Virus

Many a times you must have come across a problem in your pen drives that some files and documents are converted to shortcuts. This virus mainly targets the folders and you often get frustrated when your important files are cut down to small shortcut with size in KB. The virus is also named as regsvr virus but you shouldn’t confuse it with regsvr32 which is a system file and not a worm.


So if your problem is any of these:
  • Large files converted in KBs
  • Files changed to shortcut
  • Folders changed to shortcut
  • Folders hidden and are made as bootable file
  • Cannot open local drives like: c:\ ; d:\ etc
  • Autorun.inf file everywhere
Then here’s a solution to your problems:
You can do it both with and without softwares. The best softwares to remove the shortcut virus are-
  1. Smadav -  shortcut virus remover

  2. Wnload Combofix
    download link -Wnload Combofix
  3. Shortcut Virus Remover – you need not install it just download, double click, scan
    and fix.

  4. Download the file – Autorun Exterminator
    download link: Autorun Exterminator . Unzip it -> click and run Autorun Exterminator and insert you pen drive. It will eliminate the autorun.inf files from your pen drive and also from local disks/ drives.
  5. Malwarebytes AntiMalware

Removing the Virus Without Any Software
  1. Solution one:
    Click on Start then Run, type cmd and hit enter or press OK.
    Look up your flash drive or pen drive letter from My computer.
    Suppose if the letter is H:Enter the command.
    attrib -h -r -s /s /d h:\*.*You can copy the above line; go to the Command Prompt; Right click and hit paste.
    Note: Don’t fail to remember to swap the letter H: with your flash drive letter.
    Now press “Enter”.
    Now you can check the files in the flash drive.
  2. Solution two:
    The shortcut virus regsvr if often located in “C:\Windows\System32” so you can manually delete it following these steps:
  • In the option where you tick mark on “show hidden files and folders” , go just below it and unmark the option “hide protected operating system files” , it will show a warning popup, just ignore it by clicking yes (you can again mark this option after this task completes)
  • Now go to “C:\Windows\System32” and find regsvr and delete it using shift+delete.
  • If not found then search it in “c:\program files” else follow next step.
  • Insert your flash drive, open task manager (Note: don’t go into your flash drive or click on autorun)
  • Go in task manager à processes à click show all processes ; find regsvr and right click on it then click on end process tree.
