5 Must know facebook settings to prevent spam attacks...


Facebook has been in news this week for the spam attack which sent pornographic content, violence and animal abuse imagery on users’ walls. Many victims of this attack deactivated their facebook account . There are few things which you can do to prevent your facebook account from such attacks . 
1. Restrict information your friends can share about you
Applications and games which your facebook friends use , can request information about you and other friends even when you are not using those apps or games . This information can include your bio, photos, political views and places where you check-in.  To prevent prevent this go to your privacy settings –> apps and websites . Click on edit settings , find ‘ How people bring your info to apps they use ‘ and click on edit settings . Uncheck the unnecessary things to prevent access .

2. Restrict your profile from appearing on search results 
Facebook allows your profile to be indexed by search engines like Google .If someone Googles your name, it’s possible that your Facebook profile, along with your profile picture and any other information. To turn off this preference go to “Account” then “Privacy settings ” . Click on Edit settings adjacent to “Apps and Websites” . At the last you will see “Public Search ”  , click on “edit settings ” and uncheck “enable  public search ”

3. Use One Time Passwords 
Your facebook account’s security is at risk when you are using facebook from hotels , cafes , airports etc . For such situations facebook offers one time password . You can check this post to know more about facebook one time passwords  
4. Check what apps can access from your account
Check what information the apps are accessing from your account . Avoid apps which can post to your friends walls . To view these settings, choose Account > Privacy Settings > Applications and Websites. Then, next to “Apps you use” choose Edit Settings. Here, you can see which applications you’ve authorized to interact with your account, when you authorized them to do so, edit the settings or delete the application entirely.

5. Update Mobile and Security settings 
Go to your account settings page , select the “security settings ” tab and enable secure browsing . Similarly go to the mobile settings page and disable ” share my phone number with friends ” .
